This must be the word of the year, extortion. If you don’t do as I say, I’m going to do something bad to you. Or maybe I’ll do it anyway to see you grovel. We see that a lot today from people your church encourages you to support and you should see what the scripture says about it. Keep reading and discover if you want to (continue to) support people like that.
📖 The dictionary defines…
Extortion (noun): Obtaining money, property, or services through coercion, threats, or abuse of authority.
📖 Extortion in Scripture
The dictionary points to coercion. Scripture condemns extortion as oppression that robs the weak and dishonors God.
Anchors in Truth (three or more witnesses)
Ezekiel 22:29 — “The people of the land have practiced extortion and committed robbery. They have oppressed the poor and needy.”
Luke 3:14 — Soldiers asked John the Baptist what to do. He said, “Do not extort money from anyone by threats or by false accusation.”
Psalm 62:10 — “Put no trust in extortion; set no vain hopes on robbery.”
Proverbs 14:31 — “Whoever oppresses a poor man insults his Maker, but he who is generous to the needy honors him.”
Red Flags of Warning (revealing the danger of extortion)
Isaiah 33:15 — “He who despises the gain of oppressions… stops his ears from hearing of bloodshed and shuts his eyes from looking on evil.”
Micah 2:2 — “They covet fields and seize them, and houses, and take them away.”
Jeremiah 22:17 — “You have eyes and heart only for dishonest gain, for shedding innocent blood, and for practicing oppression and violence.”
✨ Why This Matters to You
Extortion thrives on fear and abuse of power. Anchors in Truth call for justice and compassion, while Red Flags of Warning reveal the destruction awaiting those who exploit others. Did you see Proverbs 14:31 — “Whoever oppresses a poor man insults his Maker, but he who is generous to the needy honors him.” How is it churches can support policies distinctly opposite Jesus and still have anyone in the pews. Christianity is in serious ca ca by their silence to the cries of the poor and oppressed.
