Were the Ten Commandments Given Only to Israel? Yes indeed!
What's a Rooster have to do with it? Appalling that evangelicals, NAR and nationalists want them posted in schools to represent Christianity when they don't.
Joining the Kindness Movement each month on the 25th day encourages you toward purposeful kindness. Why? Because it feels good to you. You start thinking about helping someone. You start looking forward to doing even more kindness. It’s a two-fur. A win win for both. And kindness begets kindness. Kindness becomes contagious. Join our movement. About This Series
This post is part of Conversations With Intelligence, a series of scriptural, grounded conversations intended to identify and challenge teachings that conflict with the words of Jesus and the New Testament in churches today. These reflections are offered as a warning against deception and as a call to exercise discernment, particularly where certain church traditions may lead believers onto paths Scripture does not support.
A Conversation With Intelligence
The Rooster Revival asked: Were the Ten Commandments Given Only to Israel, or do They Represent Jesus too?
Intelligence answers:
The Ten Commandments Were Given Exclusively to Israel
Exodus 19:3–6
3 And Moses went up unto God, and the LORD called unto him out of the mountain, saying, Thus shalt thou say to the house of Jacob, and tell the children of Israel;
4 Ye have seen what I did unto the Egyptians, and how I bare you on eagles’ wings, and brought you unto myself.
5 Now therefore, if ye will obey my voice indeed, and keep my covenant, then ye shall be a peculiar treasure unto me above all people: for all the earth is mine:
6 And ye shall be unto me a kingdom of priests, and an holy nation. These are the words which thou shalt speak unto the children of Israel.
Exodus 20:1–2
1 And God spake all these words, saying,
2 I am the LORD thy God, which have brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage.
Deuteronomy 4:13
13 And he declared unto you his covenant, which he commanded you to perform, even ten commandments; and he wrote them upon two tables of stone.
Deuteronomy 5:2–3
2 The LORD our God made a covenant with us in Horeb.
3 The LORD made not this covenant with our fathers, but with us, even us, who are all of us here alive this day.
Psalm 147:19–20
19 He sheweth his word unto Jacob, his statutes and his judgments unto Israel.
20 He hath not dealt so with any nation: and as for his judgments, they have not known them. Praise ye the LORD.
Conclusion:
Scripture plainly states that the Ten Commandments were given to Israel, as their covenant, and not to the nations.
Gentiles Were Never Under the Sinai Covenant
Romans 2:14
14 For when the Gentiles, which have not the law, do by nature the things contained in the law, these, having not the law, are a law unto themselves.
Romans 9:4
4 Who are Israelites; to whom pertaineth the adoption, and the glory, and the covenants, and the giving of the law, and the service of God, and the promises.
Acts 15:19–20
19 Wherefore my sentence is, that we trouble not them, which from among the Gentiles are turned to God:
20 But that we write unto them, that they abstain from pollutions of idols, and from fornication, and from things strangled, and from blood.
Ephesians 2:12
12 That at that time ye were without Christ, being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers from the covenants of promise…
Conclusion:
The New Testament repeatedly affirms that Gentiles were not placed under the Sinai covenant, which includes the Ten Commandments.
Jesus Did Not Renew the Sinai Covenant — He Replaced It
Hebrews 8:6–7
6 But now hath he obtained a more excellent ministry, by how much also he is the mediator of a better covenant, which was established upon better promises.
7 For if that first covenant had been faultless, then should no place have been sought for the second.
Hebrews 8:13
13 In that he saith, A new covenant, he hath made the first old. Now that which decayeth and waxeth old is ready to vanish away.
Conclusion:
The Ten Commandments belong to the first covenant.
Jesus mediates the new covenant.
They are not the same covenant.
The New Covenant Law Is Written on the Heart, Not on Stone
Jeremiah 31:31–33
31 Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel, and with the house of Judah:
32 Not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day that I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt…
33 But this shall be the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel; After those days, saith the LORD, I will put my law in their inward parts, and write it in their hearts…
2 Corinthians 3:3
3 Forasmuch as ye are manifestly declared to be the epistle of Christ ministered by us, written not with ink, but with the Spirit of the living God; not in tables of stone, but in fleshy tables of the heart.
2 Corinthians 3:7–11 (summary of the full passage)
Paul calls the law written on stones “the ministration of death” and says it “was glorious” but “is done away” and replaced by the “ministration of the Spirit,” which is “much more glorious.”
Conclusion:
The New Covenant law is internal, spiritual, and Christ‑centered, not the stone tablets of Moses.
Jesus’ Law Is Love — Not the Sinai Tablets
John 13:34
34 A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another.
Galatians 6:2
2 Bear ye one another’s burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ.
Romans 13:8–10
8 Owe no man any thing, but to love one another: for he that loveth another hath fulfilled the law.
9 For this, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not kill, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness, Thou shalt not covet; and if there be any other commandment, it is briefly comprehended in this saying, namely, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.
10 Love worketh no ill to his neighbour: therefore love is the fulfilling of the law.
Conclusion:
The law of Christ is love, not the stone covenant. Not domination over others.
Final Sola Scriptura Answer
Yes — you are correct.
When Christians display the Ten Commandments in schools “to represent Jesus,” they are actually displaying:
The Sinai covenant, given only to Israel
A covenant Jesus replaced, not renewed
A law written on stone, not on the heart
A system Gentiles were never under
Jesus’ law — the New Covenant — is love, written by the Spirit in the heart, not engraved on tablets of stone.
